“On Halloween the thing
you must do Is pretend that nothing can frighten you
An' if somethin' scares you
and you want to run Jus' let on like it's Hallowe'en fun.”

Tip of the Month

Fall is the time to transplant the perennials in your garden if you don’t like their current locations or the plants have grown too large and need to be divided. Follow these tips for easy transplantation:

• Transplant perennials six weeks before the first frost date where you live.

• Pick a new site and prepare the soil before digging up the perennial.

• Make the switch early in the morning or at dusk, not during the mid-day heat. Dig up the plant and cut off its foliage 1 inch above the base. If the plant is large, you should dig around the plant in a large perimeter so you don’t accidentally cut off roots.

• Replant the perennial immediately.

• To divide a plant, place it upright or on its side and use a large cutting knife or a spade to create as many rooted pieces as you wish. Plant these immediately.

• Pat soil around the transplant and add a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch.

• Water the perennial deeply every day for two weeks, unless it rains.

Seasonal Suggestion

Are you too busy to even think about decorating for Halloween? If spending a few hours to carve a jack-o’-lantern seems daunting, try these quick and spooky decorating ideas:

• Instant haunted house – Create your own haunted house quickly by taking several white sheets and draping them over furniture to create an abandoned effect. You can even remove a few pieces from a room to make it seem less lived in. Create instant dust (or leave the dust that’s already accumulated) by sprinkling talcum powder or baking soda on surfaces. You can also quickly add some synthetic spider webs in choice places.

• Quick ghosts – To make a ghost, simply blow up a balloon and center and drape a white sheet over it. If you place the tied end of the balloon at the top, you can insert a safety pin through the sheet and the tie and suspend the ghost from the ceiling.

• Easy luminaries – You don’t have to spend a lot of money or spend hours at the craft table to make funky luminaries. Take a few plain paper lunch bags and write Halloween words like “Boo!” or “Eek!” on them with black marker. You can also stamp them with Halloween stamps. Add sand in the bottom and place a votive candle in the center and you’re ready to go!

• Simple gross anatomy – Make an accent everyone is sure to talk about! Fill a clear jar with water and add a few drops of green food coloring. Place a novelty Halloween item in it, such as a fake eyeball or rubber bat.

• Effortless pumpkin display – Carving a pumpkin can be quite time-consuming, so here is an easy substitute. Take a garden urn or a flowerpot and stack two or three pumpkins, one on top of another. Instant pumpkin topiary! Cut off the stems and hot glue the pumpkins together to create more stability.
