“On
Halloween the thing
you must do Is pretend that nothing can frighten you
An' if somethin' scares you
and you want to run Jus' let on like it's Hallowe'en fun.”
-19th century Halloween postcard
Tip of the Month
Fall
is the time to transplant the perennials in your garden if
you don’t like their current locations or the plants
have grown too large and need to be divided. Follow these
tips for easy transplantation:
• Transplant perennials six weeks before the first
frost date where you live.
• Pick a new site and prepare the soil before digging
up the perennial.
• Make the switch early in the morning or at dusk, not
during the mid-day heat. Dig up the plant and cut off its
foliage 1 inch above the base. If the plant is large, you
should dig around the plant in a large perimeter so you don’t
accidentally cut off roots.
• Replant the perennial immediately.
• To divide a plant, place it upright or on its side
and use a large cutting knife or a spade to create as many
rooted pieces as you wish. Plant these immediately.
• Pat soil around the transplant and add a 2- to 3-inch
layer of mulch.
• Water the perennial deeply every day for two weeks,
unless it rains.
Welcome to the October 2007 issue of
“At Home with HouseHunt,” HouseHunt’s
monthly consumer newsletter. It seems like only yesterday
that we’re saying farewell to autumn… and
here it is again once more! A majority of the market
is buyer-driven at the moment, but that’s still
no reason for first time homebuyers to leap blindly
into a new home. This month we present a series of steps
for first timers to follow before they make that first
purchase. Part of the joy of owning a home is having
the ability to accessorize and customize your home to
your liking. Our feature on personalizing your home
should prove to be a terrific inspiration for people
looking to create their ideal home. Clean drinking water
is becoming a prime commodity in many areas of the country,
and our in-depth look at choosing the best drinking
water for you and your family is a must read. It seems
that no matter the neighborhood, there’s always
that one neighbor that drives everyone else crazy. At
times, it feels like there’s nothing you can do
to help yourself, but our story, “Nuisance Neighbors:
How to Cope” will give you plenty of advice. No
home sale is complete without navigating your way through
a plethora of paperwork. It seems that you have to sign
paper after paper after paper. Before you do that, make
sure you take a close look at this month’s piece
on avoiding pitfalls hidden within the fine print of
your contract. Finally, October is synonymous with Halloween,
and we offer some great suggestions to make decorating
your home for the season quick and fun. Also, look for
